I grew up on the edge of Dartmoor, and always look forward to seeing it again when I visit family. I took my first steps on this part of the moor, learned to swim in the cold river and have galloped on horse-back across the Down.
Over Christmas, I walked with my husband and father to the river Lyd, across High Down. It was mild and wet under foot from days of rain, and the distant views towards Lydford, Brentor and beyond were softly tinged with blue. Rust-coloured bracken covered the lower slopes.
